Dahab
These photos were taken in the small coastal
town of Dahab, located in the Sinai region of Egypt. The
undersea environment of the Red Sea brings busloads of foreign
tourists to dive here all year round.
Along the fore shore runs the town's main
street, populated by a strip of hastily erected hotels,
restaurants and dive shops. A stone's throw from this main
street is where I took my photographs. Here, the desert
landscape is littered with building sites, half buried plastic
refuse and other long forgotten debris. In some cases it
is hard to tell what is being constructed and what is being
torn down. It feels like being in a gold rush town, immediate
gain seems to prevail over any long term viability issues.
The town and its surroundings are perhaps
as much a monument to the current prevalent culture, as
were the pyramids of earlier times.
