Flying Nun
'Under the Influence'
an album in a day.
It was Flying Nun's 21st birthday,
and they had decided to record an album to celebrate - in
21 hours; just over an hour for each band to record two
songs.
Garageland started things off, quietly
and without fuss, and set the tone for the rest of the day....
I had expected chaos, schedules thrown out the window, and
artists throwing their toys.... but no theatrics, no violence,
just pure music.
And what music, there is something
special about being right in the booth with Chris Knox as
he keens quietly to the microphone, for me at least, an
exceptionally intimate moment.... I felt exposed, hardly
daring to breath, thanking my choice of bringing a blimp
(silencer), so I could shoot these otherwise impossible
scenes.
Its tricky, trying to capture
the emotions evoked by the music... It's very easy to hear
great music while you are shooting, and be lulled into think
you are capturing great shots. All your effort and concentration
must go only into looking, to entering that trance like
state where all that matters is whats happening within
the lens.
So this is what that day boiled
down to for me; twelve shots that sum up my experience inside
the studio that day, the dark, the heat, the artists; the
art.
