Work in progress: the process of creativity
By Frankie Nicola Rouse
Work in progress: the process of creativity explores
and documents the work of two artists. As a creative person
myself I have my own personal approach to creativity, and
am interested in the approach of others.
The research explores the creative processes of each artist:
where their initial ideas come from; how these ideas are
developed; how a final result is reached; and which method
works more effectively for whom.
I have selected two artists who undertake a variety of
different creative processes in order to create their final
piece of work: John Calvert,
a sculptor currently working on a commissioned piece for
the Lower Hutt City Council to be placed on the Petone foreshore,
and Robert McLeod, a well
known painter and art teacher working on a new series of
paintings.
Each artist has a similar overall approach to their process.
Each develops concepts and ideas in the form of sketches
or other similar works, and displays these sketches in their
environment. However, that is where the similarities end.
Each artist is unique in their approach to the development
of their ideas, the materials they use, the skills they
possess, the environment they work in, and who they work
with.
This project is significant in that an understanding of
these approaches has the ability to aid creative people
in gaining a better understanding of creative processes,
and how these processes can be best used. This project illustrates
the diverse range of processes that creative people undertake
to achieve their final work.
